THE FRIENDLY VOICE FROM A CORNER SOMEWHERE IN MY SUBCONSCIOUS MIND

WHISPERING CORNERS IN MY SUBCONSCIOUS MIND

In my artistic work I deal with the interface between consciousness and subconscious. Our subconscious is like a main center of all information and memories, which strongly influence us and, on the basis of past experiences, also contribute to the formation of opinions and to many of our behavioral patterns. However, we cannot control what takes place subconsciously.

Opposed to this is our consciousness, reason and logical thinking. I imagine the subconscious as an infinite, empty, echoing space with many small places or corners like this one. They are places of remembrance that are far away from each other but in some way also connected, perhaps through an endless pipe system. There is no logic here, no up and down, it is a surreal space describing a certain mood.

Perhaps you can think of this place as an infinite house with many rooms. Some rooms are small and winding, others are huge halls with high ceilings. You end up there when you ponder something - looking for a memory, or solving complex problems. From there, the inner voice speaks when we need it most, but it also babbles when we just don't need it.

WHISPERING VOICE OF MY GLORIOUS DICTATOR

In this print series I deal with mass psychology and the influence of propaganda on the unconscious mind.

Propaganda should succeed in creating fantasies, images and opinions and circulating them in order to build up a collective consciousness and keep it under control. The rule is to fall to a charismatic, God-like leader who can tame and guide the masses. External opinion formation should arise through constant repetition, it is an implantation of imaginations in the subconscious that can work on all channels, e.g. through voice, texts and images, which further intensify the effect. Based on well-known examples of self-glorifying, propagandistic representations, I have designed this picture. In an abstract form, it deals with the strategic conquest of power through the specific use of language, texts and words and is once again intended to visualize voice and language as the tool for power. Symbolically, “The Word” is spread through the spores of the poisonous, parasitic mushrooms that grow in the magically absurd iconographic representation.

ART PRINT/ WORK SERIES

The "Talking Tools" are communication toolboxes. Several vowels and consonants can be recognized in each element. If you swap one element for another, you can use it to create any text. Our voice is like a miracle that offers us a variety of communication. You can use it to sing and scream and whisper and speak very different languages. It can function as a powerful weapon and tool of oppression as well as an instrument of kindness and peace. This interchangeability is to be symbolized by the striking representation, which is reminiscent of a precious butterfly collection.

Background for this art work is a classic technique of frame by frame animation with so-called replacement mouth shapes. Depicted as a picture sequence, the illusion of movement arises in our consciousness. It is an optical illusion, but our brain gives us the information of a fluid lip movement.

THE POWER OF THE SPOKEN WORD

This group of images deals with interpersonal communication. It describes, visually but also on an associative level, how powerful words can be and what great damage they can cause.
The images juxtapose each other, illuminating reaction and impact. For example, while one side spits out poison and pus, the other image defines the conscious and subconscious, which are bound together. The subconscious is the center of thoughts. Experiences and adventures are stored there as memories. Everything that a person experiences and experiences forms his character and shapes his life, his behavior and the way he sees things. Depending on what the person experiences, the subconscious becomes either a reliable advisor or a lifelong opponent

SUPER LABS

The Super Labs are large sized, colored ink graphics. They are part of an ongoing series of pictures in format 100 x 115 and 100 x 140.

Some of these works are currently part of the outdoor exhibition "UNLOCKED".

The Super Labs are a consecutively numbered series of images consisting of original colored ink drawings in large formats. They show endless networks of surreal laboratories. As a viewer, you can follow the branches and progressions and find countless details and possibilities. You will be occupied with a picture for a long time and always find new ways until loosing youreself. These work series continues, new graphics in large formats and different colors are in process.

The Super Labs have been in existence since the outbreak of the pandemic in China in 2019 and have been dealing with the constantly evolving current situation surrounding the virus ever since. They are a non-judgmental, but an observing, abstract mirror of social trends and an image of cohesion and division. While the first picture was still about the question of the origin of the virus, the second and third were created as a sign of gratitude, showing the international solidarity of scientists and doctors in the search for a vaccine to end the pandemic. The fourth, even larger picture, was created in the sign of the dividing society. A time periode characterized by loneliness and exhaustion in society, mistrust and corruption as well as solidarity, and the prospect of an improvement in the situation.

The Super Labs 15 and 16 were shown by the ILLU KOLLEKTIV GRAZ during the permanent exhibition "UNOCKED- Illustrative Blickwinkel aus der Zwischenzeit". This was an exhibition in empty shop windows in the city of Graz, which could also be visited in the open air and freely accessible during the lockdown.
